The very best is to live by the sea. Quite close, preferably. Not so close that it gets into the floors, that's the thing. There must be some distance. But one should live by the sea. So that one can sit and look out over the sea. Watch the boats passing by, far out there. Watch seagulls and eagles fly past. Watch a goose paddling by with its young in tow. Watch seals, otters, watch cod and herring out there. Summer evenings, when the sun is down in the sea, watch the blaze spreading across the sky. Watch the mirage when skerries and islets lift themselves out of the sea and hover a bit up in the air. Watch when the wind makes foam on the waves. When the wind tears loose the foam and it flies through the air. Watch when strong winds tear the sea into a column high up in the air.
There is much to see if one lives by the sea. Ideally, one should see far. So far that one cannot distinguish between the sky and the sea.
One can live by a lake. It can be large or small. Some lakes are so big that one cannot tell the difference between them and the sea. You almost have to go down to the water's edge and taste if it is salty.
But it is water, and the gaze can rest on the water surface, rise up and see nature reflected in the water. Either as golden sunlight on a calm water surface, or as an angry wave on a wind-whipped surface. One can see birds, insects walking across the water surface, and fish surfacing. Maybe there is ice on the water – and snow. Then one can go skiing or skating.
If you live by a river, it's a bit different. But the river changes. It is calm and lazy, but it can also become fierce and dangerous. Sometimes you can hear it rolling over the stones on the bottom. Sometimes it overflows its banks. Then it can cause great damage. The ancient Egyptians were pleased when the river overflowed its banks. Then it flooded the fields, soaked the soil, filled up ponds and cisterns, and left behind a thick layer of black mud. It was this mud that fertilized their fields and meadows and laid the foundation

Reinelva

for the good life.
Our rivers are somewhat smaller and tamer. But they can still show their claws. It is fascinating to stand by a river and watch the ice flow. Then you get a small glimpse of the enormous forces at work. One can live by a river.

We depend on water. We need it to drink every day. We need it for washing, rinsing, generating light and power, as a means of transportation, and for many other things. We get much of our food from water. The oxygen we breathe is largely produced by algae that live in water.

At the same time, water is dangerous. It can contain bacteria that make us sick, we can drown in it. We can be affected by storm surges, flooded rivers, waves, tidal waves. Water must be approached with respect and knowledge.

We had a boat standing on land. It was pointed in both ends – I think it was brought from Ersfjord and barely towed to Steinfjord and dragged a bit up on the land there. It was a fantastically popular playground. I think we spent the whole day on board there. I seem to remember that it eventually ended its days on a midsummer bonfire.

Later we advanced to another boat, a small, nice pointed one moored at the quay with a fairly long mooring line. There we could row as far as the line would allow. And that’s what we did. All day. We rocked the boat, rowed under the pier, and studied the bottom for mudskippers, crabs, cockles, and basically everything else we could see. Later we advanced even further, and we were allowed to row freely in open water on the fjord.

Life jacket? That didn't exist. There were some corks sewn into canvas. Incredibly bulky and useless. It was out of the question to use it. But we took care of each other. I absolutely cannot remember any of us ever falling into the sea.

Springflo, lavtrykk og pålandsvind

But now that's enough reminiscing.
